A rare early drachm from Sikyon

SIKYONIA. Sikyon. Circa 500/490-450 BC. Drachm (Silver, 18 mm, 6.05 g, 6 h). Dove alighting to left. Rev. Large San with central palmette; all within incuse square. BCD Peloponnesos 158-159. Weber 3892. Rare and of very attractive late Archaic style. Very fine.

From the collection of Dr. A. Drakul, ex Naumann E-Auction 4, 2 June 2013, 161 and previously from a European collection, formed before 2011.

This coin is part of Sikyon's earliest coin emission, struck in the time of the Greco-Persian Wars. Unlike the abundant late Classical and Hellenistic series, the early coinage of the city is universally rare.
